Diversity symposium set for Annual Convention.

The Florida Bar's annual Diversity Symposium will focus on helping local bar associations attract more diverse members, according to President-elect Jesse Diner.

At the Board of Governors' recent meeting in Coral Gables, Diner outlined plans for the symposium, which will be held at the Annual Convention on Friday afternoon, June 26.

He said he attended a diversity symposium at the Miami-Dade County Bar Association and was impressed with how effective that was.

"We think the effort at the local level is where this ought to go at this time," Diner told the board, adding it will also give the Bar an opportunity to change the format of the symposium.

The title for this year's event is "Diversity Matters: Building the Case for Inclusion in the Legal Profession." It will run from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m., followed by a social event.

As president-elect, Diner is chair of the Member Outreach Committee, which puts on the symposium.

Diversity has a simple definition, according to the Bar: "Diversity means inclusion. The Florida Bar's objective is to foster an inclusive environment in which lawyers, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability are motivated to succeed professionally and contribute to the goals of their profession."

Symposium plans call for a panel discussion on ways local bars can improve diversity, followed by a reception where participants and presenters can mingle, talk, and network.
