Many lawyers are still holding themselves out as civil law notaries.

Some Florida Bar members still haven't gotten the word.

If you are not recognized by the Florida Secretary of State as a "civil law notary," then you can't say that you are one on your member profile page on The Florida Bar's website.

In June, the News ran a story that reported the Bar's website showed that 2,721 individuals had included "civil law notary" in their online profiles as a service they can provide. However, the Secretary of State's office says there are only 127 civil law notaries in Florida.

Since that story ran, 301 members have removed the civil law notary designation from their Florida Bar profile, leaving another 2,293 individuals who continue to erroneously list themselves as civil law notaries.

Shanell M. Schuyler, director of The Florida Bar's Attorney Consumer Assistance Program (ACAP), reminds members of their responsibility to ensure "truthful and accurate credentials" are posted on their profile page.

"Falsely indicating that you are a civil law notary on your member profile page is no different than misleading the public as to which courts you are permitted to practice," Schuyler said. "It is a misrepresentation which could form the basis...
