The statistics quoted in the November 15 article "Florida lawyers call for change" would undoubtedly change if you backed out of your approval figures those lawyers that are members of "carpetbagger law firms," with branch offices in Florida.

My experience with out-of-state lawyers, who have passed the Florida bar examination, has been that they are a menace to the public. Invariably, when caught in a mistake their response is: "That's the way we did it in Connecticut," or "That's the way we did it in New York," or "That's the way we did it in Minnesota, etc. Attorneys from the Northeast have a particularly hard time grasping the fact that Florida is not a code state, but a common law state.

I am always reminded of the attorney from a large Connecticut law firm (with no living lawyer in its name--another bone of contention), with a branch office in Naples, who advised his client who held a contract for deed, that with such agreements he...
