What's another 60 hours?

Lately, Miami attorney Scott Sheftall has been putting in grueling 60-hour weeks it the office, but none of it has to do with practicing law. It's a labor of love.

He's chairman of a snazzy fundraiser to benefit his favorite charity: the University of Miami School of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics. The Children's Celebrity Pro-Am Golf Classic, a first-rate golf and sailfish tournament, will be held April 14, 45 and 16 at the Doral Resort and Spa.

For a $1,000 contribution, golfers and anglers will have a chance to compete with 30 celebrities that include MTV Vee Jay Downtown Julie Brown, "Real TV" host John Daly, "Knots Landing" and "Kojak" actor Kevin Dobson, Super Bowl champ Mike Tomczak, UM Heisman Trophy Winner Gino Toretta, and NFL Hall of Famer Johnny Unitas, to name a few.

The goal is to have fun golfing on the "Blue Monster" and new Greg Norman-designed "Great White" course, or board a yacht to catch a sailfish with VIPS --all while helping raise $500,000 for what U.S. News and World Report has called one of the top 20 pediatrics programs in the country.

Money raised will go towards building the new Batchelor Children's Center, Comprehensive Research Institute, the Mailman Center for Child Development, the Pediatric AIDS programs, and the Pediatric Mobile Clinic that delivers health care to Miami's poorest neighborhoods.

Sheftall has gained a reputation of putting his money where his mouth is. His law firm has given $430,000 to help build the Batchelor Children's Center, now under construction.

"He came through! I was so excited," said Marsha Kegley, director of development for the UM Department of Pediatrics. "This one has certainly changed any negative views we may have had about lawyers. He's become a community leader."

Besides earning status as a "grand founder" of the UM Department of Pediatrics, Sheftall is also a member of the Alexis De Toqueville Society of the United Way, the highest level of recognition for contributions to community-oriented causes. And his firm has contributed $25,000 to build a study hail at the Boys and Girls Club in Coconut Grove.

But Sheftall does much more than write-checks for charity. He gets involved, serving on the Children's Council, a leadership support group of UM's Department of Pediatrics that promotes causes of children's health care.

"One of my main motives for doing this is I think lawyers should do more in the community to help others, and that would help the reputation of lawyers...
